The 9th National Voters’ Day was celebrated by the staff and students of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh today. ‘Prashasnika’, the Society of Departments of Public Administration and Political Science in collaboration with NSS units of the college organised a series of events. The commemoration invited a wide participation of students of all the streams.
Prof. Nirupama Luthra, Vice-Principal of the college administered a pledge to the faculty and students to uphold the democratic traditions of the country and the dignity of free, fair and peaceful elections. They pledged to vote fearlessly and without being influenced by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language or any inducement. Students of all the streams also took the pledge in their respective classrooms.
Students reflected upon the importance of the day in the Paper-reading Competition. They highlighted the significance of voting and voters’ rights, and motivated the youth to choose the candidate with sincerity. The creative and imaginative potential of the students was on display in the Poster-making Competition. The presentations covered wide areas such as free and fair elections and voting, rights of the citizens, role of the Election Commission; and generated awareness amongst the students. The Interactive Quiz related to various provisions of Election Commission, election and voting was thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. The members of Electoral Literacy Club of the college also put up a stall for registration of new voters.
The Nukkad Natak on the theme of ‘Election and Voting’ was enjoyed and applauded by the audience. The play was presented in a comical and satirical form and thus the students could understand the message easily.
Mr. Kanwar Iqbal Singh, Dean of the college gave away the prizes to the winners.
