Aryans Institute of Nursing (AIN) organized a seminar to mark the celebration of World Asthma Day at its campus. SMO, Dr. Ranjit Singh, A.P Jain hospital was the key note speaker on the occasion. Students of ANM & GNM etc participated in the session. It is to be mentioned that World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. World Asthma Day takes place on the first Tuesday of May.
Dr. Ranjit Singh while interacting with the students discussed about various aspects including causes, symptoms, precautions, preventive measures etc about the disease.
Ranjit Singh while speaking said that there are various allergens and irritants that can lead to asthma attacks. Such triggers are unique to each person but can include tobacco smoke, outdoor air pollution, dust mites, pet dander, and more.
Singh further said that there are two types of Asthma: allergic (caused by exposure to an allergen) and nonallergic (caused by stress, exercise, illnesses like a cold or the flu, or exposure to extreme weather, irritants in the air or some medications).Adding to the symptoms he said that Coughing, Shortness of breath, Chest tightness, Wheezing (a whistling or squeaky sound in your chest when you breathe, especially when exhaling) etc are the most common.
Ms Parul Guleria, Lecturer, Nursing Department while speaking said that people with asthma can prevent asthma attacks if they learn how to avoid asthma triggers like tobacco smoke, mold, outdoor air pollution, and colds and flu. Asthma episodes can also be prevented by using inhaled corticosteroids and other prescribed daily long-term control medicines correctly.
According to the reports there are 300 million asthmatics worldwide with 1/10th of those living in India. A recent review analysis of 15 epidemiological studies showed that the mean prevalence of asthma among children was 7.24%.The prevalence of childhood asthma has continued to increase in last 10 years on the Indian subcontinent due to increased environmental pollution.
