CII-IGBC launch Student Chapter at RIMT College of Architecture, Mandi Gobindgarh

Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a part of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) launched the IGBC student chapter at RIMT – College of architecture, Mandi Gobindgarh, today. As many as over 150 students and faculty members attended the launch ceremony.

The objective of the student chapter is to spread awareness on Green Buildings among students and ignite the idea of green among them, thereby facilitating India to become a global leader in embracing Green building concept.

Mr Jit Kumar Gupta, Chairman, IGBC Chandigarh Chapter, emphasized the need for thoughtful planning and sensitivity towards environment that can play an important role in design of buildings in a holistic manner. He spoke at length about the tangible and intangible benefits of the green buildings. He also emphasised upon the need to build green buildings and sustainably-built environment to improve human health, betters the environment and addresses issues such as climate change and focus on waste management, energy efficiency, water efficiency etc. Going green is not an option to adopt but an integral part of education for students, he added.

Col Shailesh Pathak, Co-Chairman, IGBC Chandigarh Chapter & CEO, Art-N-Glass Inc. said it was important to select the right type of glass for the specific usage. Either, one would be buying the costlier glass or paying high energy bills.

Mr Abhimanyu Deswal, Co-Chairman IGBC Chandigarh Chapter & Director, GLM Infratech Pvt Ltd. said the key to sustainable living is to have a both economic and social development keeping the environmental sanctity in mind. Developing a living building is a unique combination of science & architecture. Using the concept of density, designing the space to breath with involvement of green technologies will ultimately follow the energy & water saving mode. It is difficult to judge a green building only by looking at it, but, it can be done on performance monitoring.

Speaking at the programme, Ar Kanchan Garg, Dean Academics, RIMT – College of Architecture, emphasised on Green Buildings and its importance in coming future. She said RIMT would work closely with IGBC in inspiring and encouraging young minds go the green way and play a catalytic role in the green building movement.

As part of this initiative, IGBC will provide students with literature such as newsletters, technical bulletins and reference guides of IGBC rating systems, for library reference and will also have visiting faculty, Green Building Missions to  educate students on related subjects.
