Fortis Hospital, organised an informative talk on ‘Anxiety & Depression among Children’ by Dr Parneet Sidhu, Counseling Psychologist.
The talk was held for the parents of senior classes at St Xavier’s School, Panchkula. Dr Hardeep Singh, Senior Consultant- Psychiatry, was also present on the occasion and responded to the queries of the audience. Over 90 parents attended the talk.
Educating the parents on the topic, Dr Parneet said that there has been a tremendous rise in psychological problems in children. Anxiety has become a common affliction among children. Because of the competitive environment, there is an increase in parental and personal expectations.
She further discussed that parents should always keep in mind that a child is born with a unique temperament and intellectual potential that unfolds and develops within the environment he/she grows in. Children who suffer from an anxiety disorder experience fear, nervousness, and shyness, and they start avoiding places and activities.
“With treatment and support, children can learn how to successfully manage the symptoms of an anxiety disorder and depression and live a normal childhood. In addition to this, education must also focus on fostering holistic development of character and values rather than just academic excellence. The talk was applauded by the school authorities and the audience. Many parents came forward with their queries.
