Watching news these days of the coronavirus is like watching a familiar horror movie, where the protagonists of the story, despite knowing how dangerous it is to go out, still do so for the ‘thrill’ of it.
And the problem is, most of us think, this isn’t so bad. “We’re young, we’re fit, we’ll be fine even if we catch it.”
Catching the virus can mess up your life in many ways, besides just killing you.
“We are all young”—okay.
“Even if we get corona, we will survive”—fantastic.
How about needing four months of bed rest before you even feel human again. Or having your activity level restricted for the rest of your life. Not to mention having every chance of catching another disease in hospital, while you’re being treated.
So, the odds are, you might even catch coronavirus and might not even get symptoms. Great. Good for you. Very bad for everyone else, from your own parents to the random person who was just standing near you at a grocery store. You’re fine, you’re barely sneezing or coughing, but you’re walking around and you’re putting so many people in danger, without even knowing it. Is that fair? Telling you, getting out of your house for leisure isn’t worth this big a risk.
It’s the civic and moral duty of every person, to take effort to reduce this threat to humanity. Have your fun in June, July and August when this—hopefully—is over. Stay safe. Good luck.
On that note, I know, social distancing sucks, but doing it for a few days is so much better than doing it for months or even years.
