Reacting to the resignation of Punjabi University, Patiala, vice-chancellor (V-C) BS Ghuman, Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) MLA and former Punjab Finance Minister S. Parminder Singh Dhindsa on Thursday, termed it as unfortunate. S. Dhindsa said that no financial support from the state government to the university during such a crisis had disappointed academicians and educationists.

“The state government was going to set up a new Sports University in Patiala, however, on the other hand, the abandonment of Punjabi University, which has made the Malwa region immensely rich in the field of education; is an indication that the government is not serious about important institutes like Punjabi University,” said S. Dhindsa.

He appealed to the alumni living in the country and abroad to come forward to save the varsity. S. Dhindsa further said that he was personally saddened by the resignation of V-C BS Ghuman, an expert in the field of education. “The V-C had sought financial help from the state government but he decided to resign as there was no response from the government in this regard,” added S. Dhindsa.

  1. Dhindsa said that he would do his utmost to save the varsity and would submit a memorandum to Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore, who is the chancellor of the university; seeking financial assistance for the university. He also asked both the centre and state government to provide financial assistance to the varsity, so that it could overcome the difficulties and students could continue to get quality education.
