Famous models of national repute took the Tagore Theatre stage by storm this evening to showcase the 53 hands-on beautiful collections created by the graduating fashion design students of Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) Mohali. The occasion was ‘Anukama 2017’, the annual design collection show of the institute. Mr Rakesh Verma,(IAS) Commissioner cum Director, Industries and Commerce, Punjab and Director General, NIIFT was the chief guest, who also gave away awards to the promising students.

A total of 16 awards were given to the deserving students on the basis of their performance. Tulika, Ishita and Manisha Kumari won the Jury Special Awards. Manali, Manmeet and Manisha Kamboj got the awards for best usage of art in design development. Tanya Bhasin, Amandeep Kaur and Ruhani Singh won the most commercial collection awards. Mallika Saggi, Deepak Raj and Parul got the best garment construction collection awards. Sonali Dhingra, Sanjeeda and Rahul Negi got the most creative collection award, while Shruti Joshi got the Best Design Collection Award.

These students were guided by their Mentors- Dr Poonam Aggarwal, Dr Simrita Singh, Ms Deepti Sharma, Mr Gobiend Rai and Ms Navdeep. An eminent jury made up of Fashion, Apparel and Textile Experts evaluated the designed collections. The Jury included Dr Anu H Gupta, Ms Vandhya Bagrodia and Ms Ashma.

Some collections based on Phulkari, Rajasthani Mandana Art, Japanese Kimono influence, Red Riding Hood, Chandrakala, Tribal Bridal, Witches Circle, Advaita and Sufi were showcased. Three years of knowledge, sweat and assessment culminate at the annual ramp presentation.

Mr Inderjit Singh, Director, NIIFT said, “The mission of the fashion institute is to educate and mentor students interested in a career in fashion. That is where NIIFT plays a vital role in shaping the students into budding designers.”

Each student presented five ensembles each. The show was coordinated by Dr Simrita Singh and directed by Mr Hemant of M/S Shahem. Over 35 male and female models walked the ramp adding the glam quotient to the students’ creations.

The prominent models who participated in Anukama ‘17 were: Hida Siddiqui (Femina Style Diva 2014 Winner), Kimmi Kukreti (Amazon Fashion Week model), Rashi (Miss Earth India), Seep Taneja, Jyotipriya (Pantloons Femina Miss India 2011), Sangeeta Khanayat, Harshada Kulkarni, Priyanka Gill (Miss PTC Punjabi 2012 finalist), Avantika Hari Nalwa, Kamya, Amaani Satrala, Yashodhara Dutta, Shiwani Saini, Isha and Sabby, etc. The NIIFT models included- Lehar, Sejal, Alisha, Garima, Nitika, Jaswinder, Vani, Shivangi, Nikita and Mahima.

According to Dr. Simrita Singh, “This was the 20th Anukama show. It comprised of varied collections of garments created by the students of  6th semester of fashion design over a period of 6 months under the mentorship of the design faculty. The collections varied from ethnic to modern to traditional to based on craft and art.”

Dr. Poonam Aggarwal, Dy. Registrar, NIIFT said, “Students use this platform to present their signature style and statement. They have put in their best of work which can be seen in their collections.”

NIIFT is an accredited, diverse, and expanding college of Fashion, Management and Technology established in 1995 and has grown to be one of the premiere institutes. NIIFT provides B.Sc and M.Sc Degrees. NIIFT has become the breeding ground for talented fashion designers and merchandisers.

NIIFT is under the administrative control of the Department of Industries and Commerce, Punjab and  is functioning under the department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Punjab. Admissions to the Degree Programs are based on clearing the entrance test which is scheduled for 4th June, 2017. The last date of submission of applications is 25th May.
