As many as 879 students were awarded prizes for meritorious performance in academics and sports on the Annual Prize Distribution Function of GGDSD College here today. In appreciation of their brilliant performance, 85 students were awarded the Roll of Honour while 36 students received the College Colour. Another 404 students were awarded Certificate of Distinction while 354 students received Certificate of Merit. Fourteen faculty members were felicitated and awarded cash prize of Rs 5,000 each for completing their PhD during the current academic session. The function was presided over by Prof (Dr) Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Dr Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examinations, Panjab University was the guest of honour. Student Aditya Kundu was declared Sportsperson of the Year for winning Gold medal at the Commonwealth Championship in Wrestling held at Johannesburg in 2017.
The function began with the rendition of Saraswati Vandana by the college students. Mr Upkar Krishan Sharma, President, GGDSD College society, welcomed the chief guest and shared important milestones achieved by the College. Mr Sharma informed, “For the second consecutive year, GGDSD College has been included among top 100 colleges of the country by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) List released for 2018. With a rank of 82, it is the only private college in North India to figure among the top 100 colleges and the only private college affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh to have won this rank.”
Addressing students, Prof (Dr) Jaspal Singh Sandhu said, “The infrastructure and the level of teaching at SD College is outstanding. As Secretary, UGC, I have visited many Colleges of the country and SD College can easily be called the best in terms of infrastructure and teaching facilities.”
Commenting on the state of education in the country, Prof Sandhu said, “The Indian education system in India is declining and the youth needs to be innovative and think out of the box to save it. Don’t walk on the same beaten path that is being followed by everyone. Create your own path. Do not bend or compromise. Dare to call a spade and spade and never compromise on principles. Only then, will the country improve.”
Principal Dr Bhushan Kumar Sharma read the annual report of the college and shared the achievements of the college during the year 2017-18. Dr Bhushan informed, “SD College has been conferred with A+ grade for its academic excellence and outstanding achievements by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the Panjab University results of 2018, the college bagged many merit positions in the university examinations. In sports, the college bagged 212 Gold, 173 Silver and 153 Bronze medals. In International tournaments, students of the college won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medals. We also won the overall trophy in Zonal Youth Festival, Panjab University, for the fourth time in a row.”
