Mahatma Gandhi had stated that “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.

Gandhi was also against performing medical or scientific experiments on animals in the laboratories, because “animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment or abuse in any other way”.

Mr Vikas Luthra, Founder, Furever Friends (a non-profit animals rescue group) said this while talking to a group of animal welfare volunteers on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of the father of the nation, here today.

He said, “We have no right to kill any living beings against their wish for our food. Even, Gandhi stated that “the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being.”

Gandhi will always be remembered for his experiments with truth and life. He used to say that man’s supremacy over lower animals meant not that the former should prey upon the latter, but that the higher should protect the lower, and that there should be mutual aid between the two as between man and man.

Furever Friends is a leading animal rescue group in the tricity and even in few other parts of the country. The volunteers come from all walks of life. Together they have saved over one lakh animals in past few years.

Mr Luthra has been so passionately involved in the animals rescue operations that his health got neglected to the extent of failure of both of his kidneys. He has to go for dialysis every alternate day for his survival.
