Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society celebrated Pink October as Breast & Cervix Cancer Awareness Month by organizing a Breast Cancer Walkathon at Sukhna Lake here. Mrs Navraj Sandhu(IAS), Additional Chief Secretary, Haryana was the Chief Guest.
Renu Saigal, President, Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society who herself is a survivor said, “The theme for breast cancer awareness month is ‘Hope for Cure: Breast Self Examination and Early Detection’. Through the Walkathon, we spread the message encapsulated in the theme. A lady needs to be alert always towards any change or formation of lump on her breast and should be adept at a basic breast self examination too. Breast cancer is curable and this could be gauged from the participation of many survivors in the walkathon.”
Cancer survivors and senior doctors from PGI and GMCH -32 participated in the walk. There was participation from the student & teacher community as well. Students and teachers of prestigious schools of tricity like St. Kabir, St. Stephen’s, St. Joseph, Carmel Convent, Vivek High, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Shivalik Public etc took part in the walkathon enthusiastically.
NCC Cadets from Army, Air Force and Navy Wings, Army Generals, Veterans and army wives were also present in good numbers. Members of Rotaract Club Chandigarh (Himalayan), Rotary Club Chandigarh, Midtown, Inner Wheel Club, Chandigarh and Panchkula, SBI Ladies Club also took part. Senior citizens too came out in large numbers under the banner of Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association. Members of the High Court Bar association too walked for spreading awareness about breast cancer and its prevention.
Members of CESA- Carmel Ex Students Association were also seen walking in support of breast cancer patients. Aware citizens of the tricity participated in the Chandigarh City Pink Walk with family and friends. The message was clear: ‘Together we can fight breast cancer’.
Dr Pankaj and Dr Bhavna from PGI answered queries of the public. The noble cause of the walkathon was supported by Jaquar, SBI ladies Club, Shri B B Ahuja, Traders of Sector 17, Coke and Aren Jewellers. It is pertinent to mention here that Big Rox Media had made all the arrangements for spreading the word far and wide through different digital media platforms.
