DIVYA AZAD

Senior citizens today organised a Yoga session on the occasion of International Day of Yoga which was celebrated this morning by members of Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association (and other older persons) at Radha Krishan Mandir, Sector 18-C, Chandigarh.

More than 70 senior citizens turned up for the event. The programme started with lighting of the traditional lamp followed by a prayer. Participants went through various asanas after a routine of simple warm-up exercises. The hour long session concluded with Shanti Paath. Former President, Brig. Keshav Chandra, conducted the event for the third year.

The Mandir management provided mattresses for participants and also chairs for those who had undergone knee or hip replacement surgery. At least five of the participants were over 90 years old. They performed all the asanas, though with some modifications.

Talking to media after the event, Association President Inder Puri said that the Association had been running yoga centres for the last over 20 years – one each in Sectors 15 and 18 – where members get together regularly to maintain physical and mental fitness. This also sends out a positive message to younger generations and society at large. He thanked Sh Sunil Chopra and Mandir Management Committee for making available all-weather facilities.
