DIVYA AZAD
St. John’s held its Sport Day. The biggest event on its annual calendar, a unique and spectacular affair. Horses galloping, show jumping, archers, athletes, human pyramids and the grand finale was the National Anthem being sign languaged by 1000 boys.
Which other school can boast of the unique unfurling of the school flag which was tent-pegged by a horse rider from SJOBA charging down the track. And let’s not forget the equine show jumping!
The students entered the spirit of the occasion by the oath being administered by the School Captain.
The march past was led by the Golden and Silver Jubilee batches of the school.
The races began with lots of cheering and encouragement for the young and not so young athletes. The races were unique because of the participation of the Intellectually challenged students from Sadhna School and the students from Govt. School, Sector 26, with whom the school partners for community outreach. It was inclusiveness at its best to see them participating along with the Johnians. The Teachers’ race and the Tug-O-War caused great excitement. Other keenly contested races were the Grounds’men race and the Hurdle race. A brilliant display of archery and horse-riding was appreciated by all.
The precision in the drill movements of the boys of the senior school stood testimony to the hours of practice put in, and as the drill ended, 4 human pyramids by the different houses were raised!
The students added to the spirit of the occasion by performing Bhangra to the dhol beats to add a cultural flavor to the occasion.
The finale of the grand show was superb with all boys and the staff performing the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, in SIGN LANGUAGE, thus showing solidarity with the differently abled and giving a voice to the voiceless.
The Chief Guest for the event, Sh. Sanjay Beniwal IPS( DGP-UT, Chd.) was very impressed with the show and congratulated the boys for their wonderful performance.
