The Cultural Society of P. G. Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised ‘Basant Utsav’ today to mark the onset of Basant. Mr. Kanwar Iqbal, Dean of the college, Head of the Music Vocal Department and Convenor of the Cultural Society, and all members of faculty of Music Vocal and Music Instrumental departments attended the function. Students of post-graduate and under-graduate classes were present in large number.
Pt. Prabhat Kumar, a renowned Sarod maestro enthralled the audience with his excellent performance. Pt. Prabhat Kumar is a disciple of Padma Bhushan Sharan Rani whose name has become synonymous with sarod. He was accompanied by Mr. Inderneel Bhomik on tanpura and Mr. Hargeet Singh on tabla. He has been decorated with many awards like Sur Mani, Janpad Ratna, Naad Sadhak, Yuva Ratna among many others.
Explaining about the instrument Sarod in his Lecture cum demonstration, Pt. Prabhat Kumar highlighted that this instrument is as old as 2200 years. He also lectured on various types of Jhalas of Senia Maihar Gharana. He performed Raga Basant Mukhari, and elucidated that it is the Vilambit gat that was played by the legendary Ustad Allauddin Khan Saheb. He also played Drut gat, Maanjh Khamaj and ended the programmed with Raag Mala with Raag Basant.
During the interactive-session, the students had a direct interface with the master and the audience benefitted immensely from the lecdem.
