Earth Day Marked by launch of ‘Water Conservation Fortnight’

Today, to mark the World Earth Day celebrations, Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration along with an NGO-Yuvsatta launched a ‘Water Conservation Fortnight’ in which from April 22 onwards, their team of volunteers will reach out to approximately 30,000 School students sensitizing them on vital source of life-Water Conservation & its judicious management.

A formal launch programme with a street play ‘Water-Elixir of life/Jal hi Jiwan hai’ directed by Ravi Kumar, a green quiz and talk on water audit at homes by Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta, was organized today at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33D, Chandigarh. In which over 2000 School students participated and took a pledge to conserve water.

Giving information about the initiative Santosh Kumar, Director, Department of Environment informed that with the onset of summers the situation the demand for water goes up and it becomes imperative for each one of us not to waste a single drop of water and propagate its judicious use. He also shared that this campaign is also to motivate more and more people, especially young students to hold ‘water audit’ at their homes in view of the growing fresh water crisis. Students will be sensitized to note down total consumption of water during cooking, gardening, bathing, brushing one’s teeth, shaving, in toilets, washing cloth’s, open spaces and vehicles and come out with ideas to reduce this consumption by at least 20-25%.

The programme ended with prizes for the winning students of ‘Green-Quiz’ presented by Indira Beniwal the School Principal.
