The Centre has blocked 43 mobile applications for engaging in activities that are “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”. “Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India today issued an order under section 69A of the Information Technology Act blocking access to 43 mobile apps,” a government statement read.
The Centre’s move comes after it had banned 59 Chinese mobile applications in June, the government banned 118 more applications in September 2020, mostly Chinese. The central government has banned a total of 220 apps including the viral video platform, TikTok, and the popular mobile shooting game, PUBG, in what its ministers call a “digital strike”.
The blocked apps include Alibaba Workbench, AliExpress, Alipay Cashier, CamCard and WeDate. AliExpress, a China-based online shopping platform, is popular in India.
