Maintaining heart health is crucial for the overall well-being and longevity of an individual. The heart, being central to the circulatory system, relies on a combination of healthy lifestyle choices, regular medical care, and effective management of risk factors. However, misuse and overuse of antibiotics and other medicines can significantly impact heart health in numerous ways.
Dr Shivani Juneja Bedi, Consultant, Clinical Pharmacology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, through an advisory sheds light on the judicious use of medicines.
Strongly advocating against the consumption of medicines without a prescription, Dr Bedi, said, “One should strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage, not take medications for non-intended purposes, nor combine drugs without medical supervision. This can cause cardiovascular risks and put an individual at an increased risk of arrhythmia, which can be potentially life-threatening. The overuse of NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or stimulants can cause or worsen hypertension, while increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Combining medications without medical supervision can result in harmful interactions.”
Dr Bedi further elaborated, “Mixing anticoagulants with certain other drugs can increase the risk of bleeding, while combining stimulants with anti-depressants may cause severe hypertension or arrhythmias. Some drugs like chemotherapy agents or the long-term use of alcohol and cocaine, when misused, can lead to disease of the heart muscles which can impair the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. Stimulants and recreational drugs may also contribute to lifestyle factors that exacerbate cardiovascular risk, such as poor diet or lack of exercise.”
Stating that the irrational use of medicines may also exacerbate or induce insulin resistance, Dr Bedi, added, “This may lead to diabetes and cause further cardiovascular complications. In addition to this, irrational drug use often indicates a lack of adherence to the prescribed treatment, which can worsen underlying conditions and complicate the management of heart diseases.
Smoking, excessive alcohol use, or drug abuse can negatively impact heart health. In the nutshell, it is crucial for individuals to use medications as prescribed and consult healthcare professionals about any changes in their medication regimen.”
