The Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology, Mohali presented SUVYAN’19, a display exhibition to showcase the final design collection of the graduating students of Textile Design Department at Hotel Shivalik View,Chandigarh.
This final collection was a virtual reality and integration of the learning, hard work and toil of the students of textile department, who have put in their time, energy and their sense of inspired designs that has been imbibed by them during their course of study in this institute.
Three years of rigorous learning and efforts culminated at the Annual Final Collection – Suvyan’19
Through the media of colors, materials, finishes and techniques students expressed individual statements as design solutions for fabrics and home furnishing products etc.
Mrs. Vini Mahajan, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to Govt. of Punjab, Department of Industries and Commerce, Punjab & Chairperson, NIIFT, said “NIIFT is indeed a jewel in the crown amongst the colleges of Punjab and I am glad to know that it is producing highly skilled students who command high value in the fashion and textile sector not only in the State but in the whole country”
Mr. Manjit Singh Brar, IAS, Director of Industries and Commerce and Director General NIIFT said “Every year opportunities at Suvyan are increasing and it is an excellent forum to exhibit the latest trends in textile sector as projected by the young budding textile designers of NIIFT.”
This year SUVYAN showcased 55 collections by the graduating students of Textile Design Department. The collection included apparels, accessories and home furnishing products. All of the products have been designed, keeping in mind the latest, trending and unique themes that the companies demand for.
The faculty members Ms. Shweta Sharma, Head of Department Textile Design, Ms. Deepti Sharma, Ms. Navneet Kaur played a vital role in guiding and mentoring the students so as to get a better outcome of their work. Dr. Meeta Gawri & Ms. Neeji Bansal also extended constant support.
An eminent jury was invited to evaluate the collections for the awards. The jury included art proponents, textile designers and industry experts. The jury members were Mr. Yogesh Verma, Director, May Design Studio; Ms. Isha Kaushal, Senior Designer,May Design Studio and Mr. Sanjay Kulsheshtra, Fabric Quality Analyst, Nahar Fabrics.
Each student worked with an industrial client for a period of 5 months which lead to the development of their individual collections and exhibition of design work. These industries were Nahar Fabrics, Vardhaman, May Design, Bombay Dyeing, Orient Craft,Shahi Exports,Swayam India,Mahajan Overseas, Trident, Arvind Mills, Bombay Dyeing etc.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. K.S Brar, Director NIIFT said “Suvyan is a platform for showcasing the innovative design abilities of the textile design student. We look forward to taking advantage of this platform to attract more companies and build relationships with them.”
Sh. Inderjit Singh, Registrar NIIFT said “Textile industry is the core and a necessary element of garment development. It is a pleasure to help industry with trained professional in this field.”
Smt. Poonam Thakur, Principal NIIFT said that “NIIFT is poised to expand and enter the next level of Design education as per needs of the textile industry.”
“Suvyan has been very close to my heart as students put in their heart and soul in creating beautiful piece of work which is ultimately recognized by the industry”, said Ms. Shweta Sharma,Head of the Department, Textile Design .
Some of the collections brief-
DIVYANSHU KUMAR: Interned at Mahajan Overseas Pvt. Ltd., Panipat. He worked on the three themes- First being Coastal Terrain which was inspired from the coastal region and coastal life, second being Garden gage, inspired from the surrounding garden and third was Distressed Pandora that had the distressed, rustic textured shapes.The home furnishing collections had various innovative Printing, Embroidery and Weaving Techniques.
MAYANK KUMAR: Interned at Bombay Dyeing, Mumbai, explored hand artworks and useddigital print technique for home furnishing collection that was based on the themes Blended Blossom, inspired from blooming flowers, Camo Geometric Splash that included the mixture of textures and geometric patterns, and Dynamic Impression that was inspired from the abstract art.
MRITYUNJAY: Worked in the Printing and Garment Deptt. at Tarun Tahiliani Design Pvt. Ltd, Gurugram, Haryana. The garments were inspired from Bohemian and Mandala Theme with the beautiful arrangement of designs forming unique prints with the usage of trending and subtle colors.
RICKY: Interned at Shahi Exports , Faridabad worked on three themes , Bohemian Saga including the bright colored motifs,Pastel Striations in which the collection had a unique color variations of Stripes and also the collection showcased for Wooden Impression that was inspired from the block Prints had the dye effect and distressed look with subtle earthy and natural colors.
SNIGDHA: Interned with Trident Group, Ludhiana worked upon the themes like Aab Rang that was entirely inspired from the nature, Ba Dastoor that was highly inspired from the Indian Monuments and the Indian Wedding designs and culture and Vougish theme where the inspiration was Stripes. The techniques showcased in the collection were Digital Printing, Rotary Printing, Vectors and Free Hand Designs.
SHEKHAR : Interned at Swayam India ,Gurugram worked on three themes for home furnishings- first being the Geo Bohemian Floral, second being the Marine life for Cushions that had the exploration of the artworks inspired from the underwater animals while third being the Mughal art that was entirely inspired from the Mughal era , the theme was showcased in the Bags collection.The technique used was Digital Print.
HIMANSHI: Interned at Mohan clothing Company Pvt. Ltd. (Blackberry’s), Gurugram. Worked on the themes- first Wagara, inspired from the historic designs, the collection of this theme had the Digitally printed, second Neo Classic that included yarn dyed checks and stripes pattern, weaved for formal men’s wear collection and third theme being, The Singapore Technique that showcased the culture of Singapore
VIDHUSHI: Interned at Orient Craft, Gurugram worked on three themes and focused on the machine embroidery technique. The first theme being Flometric inspired from deathly hallows and florals, second being Ritavia, inspired from various symbols and third minimalistic collection being Indigo dimensions.
PRASHANSA: Internedat Nahar Industrial Enterprises Ltd., Lalru worked on the themes Trippy Tropical for the women’s wear, Modern Mariner inspired from marine life for the Kidswear collection. the techniques used were screen printing and third theme being Upbeat Summer, the weaved collection for the kids inspired from the checks with the usage of bright colors.
TEXTILE DESIGN
Textile Design forms the core of the whole business of fashion. The rapidly expanding activities in the export and domestic sector of the Indian apparel and home fashion industry demands professional inputs in design and development of textiles and raw material, which is responsible for 60-80%of the cost of the product.
Textile Design today is that strategic value adding activity that can make all the difference in transforming a fashion business into an economically viable and profitable proposition.
