The Library Department of P.G. Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised a One-day Capacity Building Workshop on “Web-based Educational Resources” under the aegis of RUSA today. More than two hundred students and 85 faculty members registered for the workshop. The faculty members were from various government colleges and government-aided colleges of the city.
The aim of the Workshop was to give a hands-on training to the teachers and students for wise and optimum use of web-based educational resources. The resource-person for the first and second Technical Session was Dr. Preeti Sharda, Librarian, Regional Institute of English, Sector-32, Chandigarh. Elaborating on ‘National Digital Library’ in her first presentation, she explained about the salient features of NDLI.

She stressed that with a multi-lingual interface, the academic material is available in seventy languages and it is very easy to register as it is free of cost. One can access text, ppts, videos, thesis, books and simulations, and the repository has a collection of more than two crore documents covering all classes and with varying levels of difficulty. An on the spot demonstration of the NDLI app was also carried out to show that the search or browse results are better than google.

In her second presentation ‘Google Classroom’, she highlighted that it is a free web service developed by google for schools with an aim to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way. Further, sharing of files between the teachers and students will create a more effective academic environment. Both the sessions were highly interactive and the students posed questions before the speaker about the methodology of usage of the app.

In the third Technical Session, Dr. P.V. Rao, Librarian, Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration, Chandigarh enlightened the audience on open access resources and their utilisation. He also discussed ‘Plagiarism’ and various issues related to plagiarism.

The delegates benefitted immensely as the Workshop did not have a theoretical perspective only. They witnessed practical demonstration and carried out the searches on relevant study and reference material themselves as well.
