More than 800 people participated in the event walkathon organised on the occasion of World Heart Day 2019 by Paras Hospitals Panchkula to create awareness at Yauvnika Gardens.
The Walkathon was Flagged off by Sh.Rajesh Jogpal, IAS, Commissioner Municipal Corporation Panchkula. More than 800 people from Senior Citizens Association of Chandigarh, Panchkula, Bharat Vikas Parishad, NCC cadets, Panchkula Ladies Club, Good Morning Club, Sutlej Public School, SBI, NIMA, IMA participated in this Walkathon.
Addressing the media person Dr H K Bali , Chairman Cardiac Sciences, Paras Hospitals Panchkula said “India tops world in heart attacks among 35 plus men and Cardiovascular diseases would be the largest cause of death and disability in India by 2022 as per a World Health Organization (WHO) report. The average age of people with heart ailments is coming down and these days we are getting patients as young as 25 years who are coming to us with Heart attack,” he said. He added that patients with Coronary Artery Disease under the age of 40 have increased from 10 percent a decade ago to 15 percent today.
Dr H K Bali also shared that in India, heart ailments have replaced communicable diseases as the biggest killer. According to recent data, approximately 30 percent of the urban population and 15 percent of the population living in rural areas suffer from high blood pressure and heart attacks. As the risk factors of heart ailments increase, so does the mortality rate.
Sharing his experience Dr Kapil Chattree Sr Consultants Cardiology added, “Patients with Type 2 Diabetes have 2 -3 time higher risk of heart problem as compared to general population. The population of diabetics in India is about 50.8 million, which according to the International Diabetes Federation is by far the highest number reported among all parts of the world. Current scenario demands an immediate emphasis be laid on preventive healthcare. This involves raising awareness about the disease and its risk factors. Conducting public education programs, workshops and counseling sessions for creating awareness at a mass level.”
On this occasion Dr Rana Sandip Singh, Director CTVS shared that according to t World Heart Federation, at least 80% of premature deaths (because of cardiovascular diseases) can be protected by controlling four main risk factors such as unhealthy diet, tobacco use, lack of physical activity and Stress. Dr.Rana also shared that deaths due to cardiovascular diseases in India increased from 1.3 million in 1990 to 2.8 million in 2016, and more than half the deaths caused by heart ailments in 2016 were in persons less than 70 years of age. Dr Rana also shared that in India 3 lacs children are born with heart defects every year.
But as to very limited Hospitals offer Pead Cardiac Surgeries and Pediatric Intervention, more that 50 percent of patients are deprived of timely cardiac interventions, Besides this many cases come to tertiary centre very late and by that timer these cases become inoperable
On this occasion, Mr. Ashish Chadha, Facility Director of PARAS Hospitals Panchkula said that 2.4 million Indians die due to heart disease every year, as such we need to make a conscious effort to sensitize people about these diseases, the right course of treatment and preventive measures that will help them deal with cardiac problems.
