Snapdeal, India’s leading value-focused e-commerce platform, is making rapid progress in its mission of taking India’s bazaars online.
India’s consumption is US$800 Billion, which is growing consistently and will reach US$2 Trillion by 2025. Online commerce is nearly 2% of India’s retail and will reach 10% by 2025. Thus, the online market in India will be worth US$ 200 Billion in the next 7 years.
In India, 10% of the retail is in the organized sector and 90% of India’s retail is serviced by the unorganized sector – the various bazaars that are common in each and every state and city in the country. In the past, unorganized retail was adversely impacted by organized retail and had no recourse. Snapdeal built a marketplace to provide these sellers with an opportunity to move online in order to grow.
Punjab-based sellers are the highest sellers of sports goods on Snapdeal and serve buyers all over the country. Some of the popular sports goods sold online by Punjab-based sellers are punching bags, badminton rackets, sports shoes, hand wraps, and home gym sets. They also sell huge quantities of safety rods and whey protein. Majority of the sports goods come from sellers based in and Jalandhar.
Among the other categories, Punjab-based sellers also sold crepe tops, phulkari dupattas, and embroidered juttis. Anarkali suits from sellers of Zirakpur and watches from Ludhiana are popular all across India.
Snapdeal has more than 500,000 registered sellers from across India.
On the buyer’s side, the e-commerce market in India is growing not only in size but also in diversity. In 2018, India’s e-commerce heralded the rapid emergence of buyers from India’s Tier 2 & 3 cities. This growth of e-commerce into India’s non-metro cities will accelerate in 2019 and over the next few years for obvious reasons.
On the other hand, Punjab has a very good road network through national highways (NH) which helped us find partners to service 676 pin codes in Punjab. Today, 62% of the population in Punjab lives in rural areas. The bazaars in these small towns and villages have limited products and lack options at all price points. Snapdeal provides access to items from all leading bazaars of India.
Punjab’s per capita income is significantly higher than the national average, making it a great market for us. (Punjab: INR 140872; national: INR 112835)
Value-priced budget phones like iKal K28, GOME C7, Vivo Y91i, electronic accessories especially speakers and headphones, seller branded fashion and everyday home utility items are popular with Snapdeal’s buyers in Punjab. Some of the favourite products of buyers in Punjab are cosmetics, kitchen tools and appliances, headphones, gaming accessories, hard disk, speakers and more. The highest value item sold in Punjab is HP Laptops while some of the low-value items include textbooks, phone holders, and rose, marigold, tomato and cucumber seeds.
Snapdeal is a pure marketplace with options at multiple price points, authentic buyer reviews and ratings from buyers of the product, and an easy to navigate app and website. It has 60 million+ products across 800 categories.
