Post Graduate Department of Economics of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised a Talk on “Sustainable Development Goals and Gender Responsive Governance”. Dr Prabhakar Reddy, Consultant, United Nations Women MCO New Delhi, was the resource person for the expert talk.
Making his presentation, Dr. Reddy emphasised that Gender Equality is the main agenda of the United Nations, and steps towards women education and employment will enhance their financial independence and empowerment. Such measures are necessary to bring policy changes and now women should play a greater role in policy making. He stressed that Anti-poverty programmes should target poor women. The emphasis should not only be to increase gross enrolment ratio in higher education, but quality education should also be provided. The mind-set of preference for male child can be changed by creating awareness among the masses and stricter punishment against female feticide should be enforced.
About 300 students and faculty members of the college attended the Talk. The audience appreciated the speaker for disseminating pertinent and useful information. Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college, and Mrs. Gurpreet Kaur, Head of the Department of Economics graced the event.
