Today, Department of Forest & Wildlife of Chandigarh Administration along with Yuvsatta-an NGO organized World Forestry Day Celebrations at Kansal Log Hut, in which 200 School students of Govt. Girls Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 18D, Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 33D & Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 46D participated.
Giving information about the initiative Santosh Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests shared that each year on March 21 World Forestry Day celebrations provides a platform to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and of trees outside forests. As despite all of priceless ecological, economic, social and health benefits, global deforestation continues at an alarming rate and accounts for 12 to 20 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. So every increasing need today is to sensitize and promote awareness among the people, especially the youngsters-the generation next.
Celebrating the occasion in a befitting manner students of Govt. Girls Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 18C, presented a dance drama ‘SAVE FORESTS-SAVE LIFE’ and an environmentalist Kulbhushan Kanwar conducted a ‘Green Eco-Quiz’ on forests and wildlife on the occasion. Later the prize winners of Eco-Quiz and participants of dance-drama were presented with set of books by Mahatma Gandhi as prizes.
Santosh Kumar further informed that in coming days they also plan to take children’s from rural areas and slum settlements of the city to beautiful Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary to make them understand the relation of living in harmony with man and nature alike.
The programme ended with a jungle trekking for all participating students and teachers.
