To create awareness on hearing disabilities affecting young children, an informative session was organised by the Department of ENT, Fortis Hospital Mohali, on the eve of World Hearing Day at Fortis Mohali here today.

The World Health Organization’s theme for this year’s is “Ear and Hearing Care for All!” The event kicked off with a lamp-lighting ceremony. Dr. Ashok Gupta, Director and Head, ENT, Head and Neck Cancer, Fortis Hospital Mohali, briefed the audience on the significance of the day. Several children, who had undergone cochlear implantation surgeries conducted by Dr Gupta, were present on the occasion.

Speaking at the event, Dr Gupta, said, “Cochlear implantation surgery is a boon for children with hearing disabilities. Hearing is a fundamental right of everyone and nobody can be deprived of this basic right. Apart from congenital hearing loss which can be detected through neonatal screening and can be treated by hearing aids or cochlear implantation, there is increasing number of patients in all ages who are suffering from disabling hearing loss which can be either due to unawareness of optimum care, ignorance, diseases, or trauma. Not only congenital but acquired hearing loss can also be prevented and treated by various surgical/non-surgical modalities”

Dr Anuragini Gupta, Consultant, Department of ENT, Fortis Mohali, explained the benefits of cochlear implantation. Robotic cochlear implantation is an emerging surgical technique which is minimally invasive and where access to middle and inner ear will be done by small burr hole by robotic drilling process without mastoidectomy and minimize the complications of surgery and create optimal conditions for long implant life,” she said.

A cake-cutting ceremony were also organised on the occasion following which the children along with staff of the ENT Department took part in a balloon-releasing ceremony.
